Dental insurance

Dental insurance is becoming a necessity in everyday life due to the increased costs of visiting the dentist.

Dental insurance is becoming a necessity in everyday life due to the increased costs of visiting the dentist. Even routine check-ups can be costly.

For many people, it is getting increasingly difficult to find a dentist who will provide treatment on the NHS, whilst using a private practice can prove expensive. With dental insurance you can claim for treatment whether you choose to go privately or via the NHS. Private dental insurance contributes towards routine treatment, dental emergencies and serious dental problems. You can choose to be treated by any dentist and premiums do not increase with age. Depending on which scheme you choose you usually have to enrol 3-6 months prior to using the plan.

It is important for your health and appearance to look after your teeth, so affordable dental insurance is a sensible precaution.

Motorbike Insurance

Credit crunch not affecting motorbike sales

So petrol prices are high, are houses are worth nothing, everyone is living in negative equity, you can buy a bank for a quid and we are all gripped by the fear that the whole economic World is collapsing around us. But its not all doom and gloom.

Oh no. It seems that the current environment in which we find ourselves living in has forced the volumes of motorbikes being sold to go through the roof. According to figures from The Bike Insurer, the World's first bike insurance comparison website, the sales of bikes have gone up circa 20% in 2008.

According to the stats we've seen, whilst new bike sales are reducing, used bike sales are flying, which has some sort of logic to it given that people are more reluctant to buy a new bike on finance and that new bikes are dropping in value more than ever within the first 6 months of ownership.

Whilst we're on the whole subject of the credit crunch, why is it called a credit crunch when its a recession?

You can put lipstick on a pig but its still a pig. All we are doing here is taking the word 'recession', placing it in a short skirt, giving it some dark glasses and now its a 'credit crunch'. Why is the Government trying to act all smart and call it a different name. Its like the Chinese Rover. At the end of the day its a 10 year old design of a car that was rubbish when it was made. Now its just even more rubbish!

Home Insurance Calculator – Buildings & Contents

Home insurance is cheap for safety and save your home property, below you can calculate for it:

Contents Value Chart

It is important to value all the contents in your property. Be careful not to under insure or you could miss out when the time comes to make a claim. However, at the same time, don’t over insure, as this will simply increase the cost of your premium unnecessarily.

To measure the value of the contents go around every room in your house and assess their cost. This should cover all the contents that are not covered by building insurance and should include items that have been bought for you or that have been made, as these too will have to be replaced. Add a percentage for inflation and then total the contents – this should be the minimum you insure for.

Simply guessing the right amount without totalling the contents will usually backfire and leave you under insured by as much as 20%.

Rebuilding Cost Information

This is an area that can often be open for debate between the insurer and the consumer. That’s why it is the responsibility of the insurer to get this figure right.

Remember to insure the rebuilding cost of your home rather than the market value. Land normally accounts for about a third of the property’s value, yet it is not under threat from theft, storms or fire. Consequently, covering the rebuilding costs of your home rather than the market value saves on your premium. It is often less costly to rebuild your damaged house than buy another as the land it sits on typically remains unscathed.

The Building Cost Information Service (BCIS) is widely used by surveyors to provide cost advice and calculate insurance reinstatement cost investments. They are commissioned by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) to provide guidance for the rebuilding costs of properties.

To assist you in assessing the rebuilding costs of your home, moneysupermarket.com has produced a guide to help you make good judgements to form an accurate calculation of the home insurance cover you need.

Please note that this guide is no substitute for professional advice, which can be obtained from a chartered surveyor. It is a general guide that does not take into account specifics such as properties not built out of brick, properties with basements/cellars, houses with special design features, houses other than those of average quality. However, we hope you can use it as a general guide to assist you in getting the best home insurance deal for you.

Rebuilding Assessment

  1. From the BCIS website, calculate the gross external floor area of the house – this is the area measured to the external face of the external walls for BOTH floors.
  2. Obtain the rebuilding cost in £/m² from the BCIS table.
  3. Select the 'Type of Property' from the drop down menu

    • Bungalow
    • Semi-detached Bungalow
  4. Select the 'Age of Property' from the drop down menu. There are four age bands.

  1. Select the region:
    • Region One: Greater London
    • Region Two: South East, East of England
    • Region Three: North West, South West, West Midlands
    • Region Four: East Midlands, Yorkshire and The Humber, North East, Wales, Scotland
  2. Insert a figure for rebuilding any garages
  3. Insert a figure for anything else covered by the policy in the box marked 'Add for other items covered'
  4. Not all policies will be index linked so add a suitable allowance for inflation during the policy.

Home Insurance Guide

Home sweet home; there are few things more valuable in life than our own personal space or the home we make for our families. Our place to live is often the most valuable commodity in our lives and the contents within are frequently not just expensive, but of great personal value.

Why is home insurance necessary?
It’s easy to think that bad things happen to other people and not ourselves, but the facts suggest that isn’t a risk we can afford to take. In the UK, one in three of us will get burgled at some point in our lives yet about a quarter of households are not protected by any form of home insurance. With other unfortunate occurrences such as flood/storm damage, fire and more, threatening our homes and their contents, by not having insurance we are leaving ourselves open to serious financial loss.

Home insurance can now offer something for everyone with insurance for homeowners, tenants and landlords. Increasingly, mortgage lenders will insist that you have buildings insurance to obtain a mortgage.

Insurers will need a lot of information including the construction date and materials for the building, and different insurers might not insure unusual properties such as prefabricated buildings and thatched cottages. Insurers also need to know about the local lie of the land to assess the flood-risk.
